Supporting Mental Health for Youth

Every two years, the Maine Department of Education (DOE) and Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) survey students from grades 5 to 12. The most recent Maine Integrated Health Youth Survey (MIYSH) data (from 2021) shows some alarming trends illustrated below. While middle school years and high school years can be stressful, the bottom line is that more of our kids reported signs of mental health issues: too many feel that don’t feel they matter and have even contemplated suicide.

The pandemic did not help and increased feelings of isolation and uncertainty for many children. Unfortunately, when they returned to school and their friends, they may not have had the social tools to address their feelings or realize that they had people they could turn to for help.

As parents and caregivers, we can support youth as they navigate their feelings. Here are a few tips to help provide them with the protective factors to support their mental health – teaching them problem-solving and coping skills, providing a safe space to discuss their feelings, and helping them feel connected to their family and community.
