Get involved with Westbrook Partners for Prevention!
Everyone:
There’s a place for everyone who wants to get involved with Westbrook Partners for Prevention.
Here are just some of the ways you can become engaged in our work: attend quarterly meetings, join a monthly work group, host a Parent Meet-Up, “like” us on Facebook (weblink to FB page), volunteer with us at a community event.
Parents
Parents can learn more about successful strategies for teenage substance use prevention at DrugFree.org and can get confidential one-on-one support. Westbrook Partners for Prevention can also support you to host a parent meet-up—a conversation about youth substance use prevention, with tips and tools. Parent meet-ups are a chance for parents to get together, get the conversation going, and create a network of support around these issues.
Schools
Schools play an active role in our work by implementing multiple strategies. Students spend a lot of time with teachers, coaches, and other mentors outside their home. Research shows that those who are connected to a caring adult at their schools are significantly less likely to get involved with drugs and alcohol.
Schools can:
- Schedule a workshop that provides practical substance use prevention tools educators can use every day.
- Refer students to Student Intervention and Referral Program (SIRP).
- Implement substance use prevention activities throughout the school day.
- Invite Westbrook Partners for Prevention to be an active participant in school events.
Businesses & Community Members
Local businesses and community organizations are welcome members of Westbrook Partners for Prevention.
- If you’re a restaurant owner, you and your staff are invited to attend a Responsible Beverage Server Training or host one at your establishment.
- Schedule a customized workshop for staff who work with youth in a variety of after-school settings—from the public library to the local little league.
- Enroll in the No BUTS (Blocking Underage Tobacco Sales) Program
- Become a Star Store in the Westbrook Community
Law Enforcement
Law enforcement plays a key role in every aspect of substance use prevention. Examples of the work law enforcement does to keep our communities safe include:
- Coordinating drug disposal events where you can safely discard unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications.
- Conducting compliance checks with local businesses to ensure that Maine liquor & tobacco laws are being followed by licensees in order to prevent sales to minors.
